As with the first edition, this second edition of the Core Curriculum for Hospice and Palliative Care Administrators targets those who want to advance their knowledge in leadership of hospice and palliative care. In the rapidly changing landscape of our industry and the broader healthcare system, expert knowledge and skills are required of hospice and palliative care program leaders. This curriculum provides a concise compilation of the essential, and, in some cases, foundational knowledge that hospice and palliative care leaders need to ensure their programs can navigate the changes that will be required for program growth and sustainability. The curriculum has been reorganized to equip leaders with the knowledge needed to develop core competencies for successful leadership, management and administration of both hospice and palliative care programs. With the increased growth in palliative care programs, special attention has been given to ensuring an adequate balance of content related to non-hospice palliative care.

The new organization of the curriculum begins with a chapter on Leadership and Ethics, and expands the content provided on organizational strategic planning. While the values that are a hallmark of quality hospice and palliative care are enduring, never has there been a time in our specialty when we need to challenge “business as usual” and the way that we have “always done it.” A wider recognition of the value hospice and palliative care adds to the larger healthcare delivery system and the development of innovative strategies to increase our core skill set is greatly needed. Therefore, the curriculum also addresses the future role of palliative care and hospice in a reformed healthcare system. The curriculum is rounded out by content relative to the day to day Operations of hospice and palliative care programs, including a complete review of the Medicare Conditions of Participation and recent key regulatory changes. Chapters on fiscal management, quality, and community outreach and advocacy follow. The last chapter of the curriculum addresses organizational integrity and compliance, an area of program administration that has been the focus of heightened awareness and industry scrutiny for nearly a decade.
