The mission of the Alliance for Excellence in Hospice and Palliative Nursing is to serve as the unified voice in hospice and palliative nursing to integrate and coordinate end-of-life care with other members of the interdisciplinary team, to act as a visionary for specialty trending nursing issues, to be a primary resource fostering excellence in hospice and palliative nursing, and to advance end-of-life care for the benefit of the public at large.

HPNA Membership Survey
A hearty "Thank
You" to our 1,995 HPNA members who participated in the recent membership survey. This number represents 27% of the membership and is double the participation we had in our 2005 survey! The data collected and comments are being shared with the HPNA Board and the Standing Association Committees and will be posted on the HPNA website in the near future. Thank you for your comments, your questions, your suggestions and for your time.

2009 Annual Assembly Call for Proposals
The 2009 Annual Assembly sponsored by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association will be held
March 25 – March 28, 2009 in Austin, Texas.

Research Based topics will be open July 14, 2008 to August 18, 2008. A 3rd call for
Professionals in Training Case Conferences will open in the October, 2008.
Generalist Clinical Review Train-the-Trainer workshop scheduled
The next Generalist Clinical Review Train-the-Trainer program will be held on:
Saturday, September 20, 2008 Hyatt Regency, Dearborn, Michigan
The one-day workshop is for experienced hospice and palliative Registered Nurses who wish to become HPNA Approved Educators. Presented in a Train-the-Trainer format, participants will be taught facilitation skills to prepare them to teach the Clinical Review.

Coyne Neurological Diseases and Trauma is designed to serve a resource in constructing an appropriate plan of care for individuals and their families experiencing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular accident, and traumatic brain injury. These modules examine the incidence of each disease process, the pathophysiology of the illness, appropriate assessment techniques, and treatments as the disease progresses. The modules further define the psycho-social implications. The modules specifically question the potential ethical, economic and research implications as related to each specific disease process.

HPNA Practice Drivers help keep you up-to-date on evidence-based practice. They are summaries of research articles on a variety of clinical topics. Each article is succinctly condensed to give you just the information you need to practice. After the article summaries is a list of
Practice Points which recaps the “take to practice” points from the articles. A collection of three topics are selected each quarter and placed on a flash drive. Each topic is prepared as a PDF file which can be printed and shared with colleagues.

An CAPC audio conference, co-sponsored by HPNA will be held on July 31, 2008 and is entitled: “APN Billing.” This event will be presented from 1:30 – 2:30 pm EST by Constance Dahlin, APRN, BC, PCM, who is a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner at Massachusetts General Hospital. There is a fee for this teleconference.

HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE ADMINISTRATOR EXAM
The NBCHPN Hospice and Palliative Care Administrator Examination is now available for the September 2008 testing window. Eligibility requirements, exam overview, Role Delineation Study information, etc. is available on our website,
www.nbchpn.org under the ADMIN tab regarding our Administrator exam. The Candidate Handbook is updated to include the Administrator certification exam and is available on our website. Applications are now being accepted for all NBCHPN examinations for September 2008.
