HPNA! HPNA Pre-Conferences for Annual Assembly HPNA is offering the 5 pre-conferences listed below on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. A party to celebrate the leadership and awardees from HPNA and AAHPM: An Evening with Perry G. Fine & the Original Blue Healers, 8-11 pm on February 15, 2007 at the Hard Rock Care in Salt Lake City. More details at the Annual Assembly! HPNA INITIATES CLINICAL PRACTICE FORUM - Save the Date! Nursing education is not standardized across the nation in terms of hospice and palliative education. Recognizing this fact, the HPNA Board of Directors has recommended creating Clinical Practice Forums. The first forum will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8, 2007. The planning team consists of Janet Snapp, Elaine Glass, Rhonda Oakes, Dena Jean Sutermaster, Deena Butcher, Nancy Grandovic, Amy Killmeyer and Judy Lentz. An excellent program focused on Managing Non Cancer Patients has been planned. The outstanding faculty includes all HPNA members: Betty Ferrell, Connie Dahlin, Meg Campbell, Linda Gorman, Beth Fahlberg, and Judy Bartel. More than 300 attendees are expected. A pre-conference session on documentation will be presented by HPNA member, Virginia Valentine. This is an exciting event and lays the foundation for more to follow. Watch for the program booklet along with the March/April issue of JHPN. NIH Research Program Director Alexis Bakos, PhD MPH RN C, Program Director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be offering office hours during the Annual Assembly of AAHPM & HPNA in Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Bakos will be available to answer research funding questions or review ideas for research projects on Thursday, February 15, 2007 from 1 - 3:30 pm and Friday, February 16, 2007 from 10 am - 12:30 pm. Sign up sheets will be available at the assembly. Feel free to forward your questions or ideas to resources@aahpm.org prior to your meeting with Dr. Bakos and she will come prepared to discuss your ideas with you. CPC Co-Sponsored Research Symposium The AAHPM College of Palliative Care (CPC) is pleased to announce the CPC Scholars Program. The CPC is accepting applications from physicians, nurses, and social workers for funding to participate in the Annual Retreat and Research Symposium of the National Palliative Care Research Center (NPCRC), co-sponsored by the College of Palliative Care and the American Cancer Society (ACS). The CPC Scholars Program is intended for individuals who are or will soon be applying for a K award or other career development award. Priority will be given to applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to an independent palliative care research career. The successful applicant will be in the midst of or have completed formal research training (e.g., research fellowship and/or doctoral degree); currently conducting research in palliative care; have an identified research mentor; and have at least 2 research papers on palliative care or end-of-life issues published or in press, with at least one as first author. HPNA welcomes a new Chartered Chapter Congratulations to our newest chartered chapter! The HPNA Board of Directors awarded charter chapter status to the HPNA Boston Area Chapter, led by Todd Hultman, President; Susan Zorb, President-Elect; Betty Morgan as Secretary and Luis Pacini as Treasurer. Beginning in January, 2007 HPNA will offer a Journal Club via teleconference free to members and non-members. Join us at 3 pm on January 17th for a discussion facilitated by researcher Barbara Head, RN, CHPN, ACSW discussing the journal article entitled "Interest in Research Participation among Hospice Patients, Caregivers & Ambulatory Senior Citizens" from JPM. The one hour focused discussion will offer nurses the opportunity to learn about new techniques and scientific advances and understanding better how to read and critique research studies. These toll-free teleconferences are open to the first 20 sites that register by calling the National Office at 412-787-9301. The calls will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 3 pm ET. Contact hours are available at minimal cost upon request. After registering, the participant will be emailed the journal article and the teleconference call information. 2007 NBCHPN® Certification Recognition Event
NBCHPN® will host its 6th Annual Certification Recognition Event during the AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly. The luncheon will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2007 from 12:45-2:00 pm at the Salt Palace Convention Center , Salt Lake City , UT. Jeanne Martinez, RN, MPH, CHPN® will be the featured speaker. Her topic is "The Value of Certification-A National Study." Seating is limited to the first 250 registrants. APRN Hospice and Palliative Alternative Recertification (APRN HPAR)
APRNs will have the opportunity to recertify through continuing education credits. NBCHPN® is currently finalizing an alternative method for recertification in which APRNs can recertify without sitting for the exam. The APRN HPAR packet will be available to be downloaded from our website, www.nbchpn.org
2007 RN Hospice and Palliative Alternative Recertification (RN HPAR)
The completed RN HPAR application for 2007 is due in National Office on or before March 1, 2007. The 2007 Revised RN HPAR application can be downloaded from the NBCHPN® website here.
