Advanced Practice Palliative Nursing: A Guide to Practice and Business Issues
As the specialty of Advanced Practice Hospice and Palliative Nursing evolves, so does the need for tools and mechanisms to help those entering the field. Many APNs are new APNs in practice rather than new practitioners to the specialty. The decision was made to develop this toolkit that an Advanced Practice Hospice and Palliative APN can use as a reference for business practice issues. It serves not only as a check list, but also a way to get a sense of the issues, the requirements, and the considerations of practice. In particular, it is written by APNs who are in the specialty and who have knowledge and expertise to help guide the practice of our colleagues from novice to experts. This item can be purchased from
HPNA online or by calling the National Office at 412-787-9301. Cost: $30.00 (HPNA members) or $35.00 (non-members).
Newest product: Practice Drivers
HPNA Practice Drivers help keep you up-to-date on evidence-based practice. They are summaries of research articles on a variety of clinical topics. Each article is succinctly condensed to give you just the information you need to practice. After the article summaries is a list of
Practice Points which recaps the "take to practice" points from the articles. A collection of three topics are selected each quarter and placed on a flash drive. Each topic is prepared as a PDF file which can be printed and shared with colleagues.
January 2008 is available now with article summaries of:
• Enteral Feeding in Patients with Neurogenic Dysphagia
• Management of Terminal Secretions
• The Use of Opioids and Sedation at End of Life

HPNA Public Policy State Ambassadors Program
In June 2007, the Public Policy Committee (PPC) was asked by the HPNA Board of Directors to expand their focus to include policy issues at the state and national levels. A small PPC task force soon established the HPNA State Ambassador Program.
The goal of State Ambassador Program is to develop a group of HPNA members with interest/expertise in health policy who will:
• Follow and inform the PPC about critical policy issues at the state/regional levels
• Disseminate information about national policy issues to their constituencies
• Assist with policy advocacy efforts as directed by the Board of Directors and PPC

More Bang for Your Buck
Companies that offer matching gift programs can increase the value of your donation to HPNF by matching your gift.
One HPNA member, Debra Heidrich, stands out among all of our member donors. She has her annual gift working a double shift for HPNF! Debbie and her husband Bill sit down each year and plan out the gifts they want to donate throughout the year. Then they contact Bill’s company, LyondellBasell, and obtain the current information and donor form to complete. LyondellBasell then sends a check to HPNF matching Debbie’s original gift! It’s that simple!
In a telephone interview, Debbie confirmed how easy it is to set up the matching gift. She says it makes her feel good to know she is getting as she says,
"double my money!"
Does your spouse, partner, child or parent work for a company that matches employee gifts? If so, your gift to HPNF can also get more bang for your buck if you and your relative participate with a matching gift in 2008! Contact the Foundation Office to find out if a particular company matches employee gifts.

NCP Quality in Palliative Care Award
The National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care (NCP) announced the inauguration of the NCP Quality in Palliative Care Award, a program designed to recognize organizations performing superior work incorporating the NCP’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care (http://www.nationalconsensusproject.org) into their palliative care services.
"While many organizations in the United States have used the NCP’s Guidelines and the National Quality Forum’s Preferred Practices to improve the care they provide, others have yet to do
so," said Betty Ferrell, RN, PhD, FAAN, Chair of the NCP. "The NCP award is timely given other initiatives recently introduced, including the Joint Commission’s Certification for Palliative Care Programs, which recognizes palliative care programs that make exceptional efforts to improve delivery of
care."
Application deadline is September 1, 2008. For more information contact Ken Zuroski by email at
kenz@hpna.org or phone 412-787-1002.
