Certification Preparation

The National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN®) offers credentialing in this specialty for all levels of nursing care (APRN, RN, Pediatric RN, LP/VN, Nursing Assistant), Administrator, and Perinatal Loss Care Professional.

Content of each exam is derived from a validated job analysis, reflecting current practice across the country, for both hospice and non-hospice palliative care settings.  These job analyses, also known as role delineation studies, produce the test content outlines as listed in each Candidate Handbook.  Items on the exam represent various components of the test content outline.  A reference list is also provided in the handbook for each level of exam.

Each exam has a separate Candidate Handbook.  Please download and/or print the appropriate handbook for the exam in which you are applying for by clicking the handbook below:

Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (ACHPN®)

Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN®)

Certified Hospice and Palliative Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (CHPLN®

Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing Assistant (CHPNA®)

Certified Hospice and Palliative Pediatric Nurse (CHPPN®

NBCHPN® and HPNA are distinct organizations.  HPNA has no access to the specific exam content, just as NBCHPN®, by policy, does not provide educational publications to prepare for the exam.  This deliberate, legal separation is a standard for any valid professional certification process to prevent conflict of interests.

The suggested references found in each Candidate Handbook are selected by the specific Examination Development Committee and reviewed annually.  Candidates are expected to prepare using all references available as preparation from many sources, combined with individual clinical experience, are critical factors.  There is not any one source or any one educational program for examination preparation.

In addition to the HPNA publications, Nursing Assistant teleconferences, E-Learning webinars and our two journals, Self-Assessment Exams are available for the Advanced Practice Nurses, Generalist Nurses, LP/VNs and Nursing Assistants and Administrators.  The Self-Assessment Exams are comprised of retired test questions from those specific exams.
