What is ELNEC-Core Train-the-Trainer?

The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project is a national educational initiative to improve palliative care.  The course provides nurses with education in palliative care preparing them to teach the information to practicing nurses and other healthcare professionals.  ELNEC Trainers are given tools to provide this specialized care and to positively impact the lives of patients and families facing serious illness or the end of life.  ELNEC-Core content is divided into eight modules:  Nursing Care at the End of Life; Pain Management; Symptom Management; Ethical/Legal Issues; Cultural Considerations in End-of-Life Care; Communication; Loss, Grief Bereavement; and Preparation for and Care at the Time of Death. 

 

Who Should Attend?   

Staff who currently work in hospitals, hospices, palliative care facilities, clinics, long-term care facilities, homecare agencies, colleges, and universities who want to increase their knowledge in end-of-life palliative care issues should not miss this opportunity. This is a “train-the-trainer” course and upon completion, you will be able to take this information back to your institution and teach others. Who should attend? 

 

ELNEC-Core Train-The-Trainer:

Ø     Staff nurses                                   

        Ø     Advanced practice registered nurses

Ø     Undergraduate nursing faculty

Ø     Graduate nursing faculty

Ø     CE providers

Ø     Staff development educators

Ø     Nursing administrators

Ø     Members of the interdisciplinary team (i.e., physicians, pharmacists, social workers, etc.) 

 

ELNEC-Pediatric Palliative Care Train-The-Trainer:

ELNEC-Pediatric Palliative Care (ELNEC-PPC) was adapted from the ELNEC-Core curriculum to meet the unique needs of children and their families.  The curriculum also includes perinatal and neonatal content.

Ø     Undergraduate and graduate pediatric nursing faculty                   

        Ø     CE Providers and staff development educators working in pediatric settings

Ø     Hospice nurses

Ø     Homecare nurses

Ø     APRN/staff nurses working in pediatric acute care settings (i.e. oncology, medical/surgical, palliative care settings, NICU, PICU, clinics, etc.)

Ø     Other members of the pediatric interdisciplinary team are welcome to attend, with the understanding that the curriculum is written by nurses for nurses

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Ø     Interest in end-of-life/palliative care

Ø     Commitment to implementation and dissemination of end-of-life/palliative care education within your institution or organization

·        2010 edition of the Textbook of Palliative Nursing by Betty R. Ferrell and Nessa Coyle 

·        Tools for take home use: CD (contains entire syllabus), PowerPoint® slides, and supplemental teaching materials  

·        Continental breakfast, lunch, and snack breaks for both days 

·        Nursing contact hours will be awarded. Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Social worker CEs are also available with submission of social work license numbers. Course meets the qualifications for continuing education credit for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences,  BBS Provider#: PCE 2401 (CE Provider: City of Hope National Medical Center/Beckman Research Institute).

     No partial CEs given.  You must attend entire program to receive CEs.

The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Project is a national end-of-life educational program administered by City of Hope National Medical Center (COH) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) designed to enhance palliative care in nursing. The ELNEC Project was originally funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with additional support from funding organizations (the National Cancer Institute, Aetna Foundation, Archstone Foundation, Oncology Nursing Foundation, Open Society Institute, and California HealthCare Foundation).
